When you’re looking at buying a new washing machine there are plenty of important factors to take into consideration and so many different types of machine to choose from.
The volume of washing you do every week is a huge factor and will determine the size of you washing machine (measured in kgs) or dryer. Also, the physical size of the machine needs to be suitable for the space you have available.
Arguably most significant are the two key design differences: do you prefer the speed and convenience of a Top Loader? Or the superior washing quality and economy of a Front Loader?
View all buyers guidesFront loaders – designed to use less water than top loaders and because of that, less electricity as well. Front loaders clean by tumbling your clothes - rolling them over and over in a tumbling motion. They are quite gentle on your clothes and usually clean better than top loaders. Front loaders are also generally smaller than top loaders.
New features include:
- Steam refresh – get wrinkles out and makes your shirt smell great
- Automatic dosing machines – this function intuitively mesasures how much detergent and water is needed wash after wash for maximum efficiency
Top loaders – a top loading washing machine offers you superior washing speed and doesn’t cost as much as a front loader. You can add clothes with both top loaders and front loaders at any stage during the wash cycle. Top Loaders offer a large variety of sizes at a very affordable price.
When deciding your ideal clothes dryer, you need to take into consideration how often you use it on average, the amount of room and access to ventilation, its energy efficiency and what kind of environmental impact it will have.
Vented clothes dryers – these are the least complicated and least expensive options out there but unfortunately they are the more expensive to run. Their simple design means that they are comparatively light, light enough to be wall mounted to help you save space. But a good ventilation kit is required – it is important that vented dryers are positioned near an open door or near a window.
Condenser clothes dryers – the main advantage of a condenser dryer is that they use a heat exchanger to condense moisture from the exhaust air and then exit it into a tank or via a drain. The heat exchanger means there isn’t anywhere near as much condensation as what you have with a vented dryer.
Heat pump condenser dryers – tend to cost more than other types of dryer but are more efficient to run. Heat pump condenser dryers are not as quick as a vented dryer – they don’t operate with as much heat. That’s why they use less electricity and they are also gentler on clothes. There are also plenty of models that range up to 10 stars energy efficiency rating and some models have condenser self-cleaning capability.
These feature identical panelling that is designed to look as aesthetically similar as possible. This allows you to situate your matching washing machine with a condenser or heat pump dryer side-by-side.
A washer/dryer takes up less space in your laundry. You can generally expect your washer/dryer to take up half as much room as having a separate washing machine and dryer.
A Supertub is a classic wide bodys laundry workstation great for having in a roomy laundry space. Supertubs are perfect for hand washing extremely dirty sports clothes, dirty shoes and sports and hiking boots.
